Button Hole is a short golf course and teaching center designed to diversify the game of golf by creating an affordable and accessible oasis of recreation primarily for an urban, multi-cultural population.
Description:
Button Hole consists of a 9-hole short course, a 25 bay lighted driving range, two practice putting greens, and a practice pitching and sand bunker area. The clubhouse consists of a golf shop, multi-purpose room, patio, administrative office and a full basement, designed for indoor instruction. Button Hole is designed to reduce golf's barrier's of cost, inaccessibility and playing time. Located in a multi-cultural, urban environment, we are open to the public and operate as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Our focus is on the young people. Instructional programs include the etiquette, rules, history and traditions of the game. Mentoring of our urban youth by our community is strongly encouraged. Bordering wetlands, our site serves as a classroom where respect for our environment is fostered. Button Hole gives boys and girls a chance to discover and play the game of golf where life's lessons of honesty, humility and perseverance are experienced.
History:
The site where Button Hole is located used to be an abandoned gravel pit. It is now a oasis in the city thanks in large part to Ed Mauro, a local businessman, former state amateur champ, and Button Hole Chairman of the Board. Mauro envisioned a place where local children could learn to play the game he'd always loved. With the help of many generous donors and volunteers, Mauro made his dream a reality. Button Hole has the support of PGA touring professionals Billy Andrade and Brad Faxon who serve as honorary co-chairs. Button Hole is the recipient of the 2002 Preserve Rhode Island Merit Award for Neighborhood Revitalization, the 2002 Senator John H. Chafee Conservation Award and the 2003 Special Olympics Inspire Greatness Award.
