The Urban Collaborative (UCAP) serves urban middle school children who are at risk of dropping out of school because they have fallen behind a grade or more. UCAP offers an accelerated program that provides the academic and social skills these children need to succeed in school.
Description:
UCAP is located in Providence but children come from the collaborating school districts of Providence, Central Falls, and Cranston. Our students come from families that may want the best for their children, but are over-burdened by the need to work multiple jobs just to keep a roof over their heads and food on the table. Others, sadly, come from families that have been damaged by drugs, alcohol, violence. This small school enrolls approximately 140 students each year. Using a unique accelerated model, small class size and extensive "Beyond School" programs, UCAP enables students to complete two years in one or three years in two. Students are able to go on to high school with the academic and social skills to succeed. Research has shown that children ages 5 – 14 spend up to 80% of their time out of school. A study of 8th graders found that those who took care of themselves for eleven hours or more a week were twice as likely to smoke, drink, or use marijuana as those who were not in self-care after school. We now have data to confirm that children in out-of-school-time programs are less likely to commit crimes or be victimized. They watch less TV and their math and reading scores go up, along with their aspirations for the future. The "Beyond School" Programs UCAP offers are essential to our students' progress. Whatever their handicaps - poverty, language, mobility or more - these children need the second chance they get at UCAP to rise above their circumstances.
History:
UCAP was founded in 1989 as an independent public school (pre-dating Charter School legislation) to serve at-risk middle school students. Over its eighteen year history, UCAP has garnered regional and national praise for its innovative approach to giving kids a real second chance. UCAP receives tuition from the cities its students come from, but must raise money every year to provide essential "Beyond School" programs that are offered after school, on Saturdays, during school vacations and over the summer. The combination of the accelerated program, small class size and "Beyond School" programming has proven successful in getting students back on track.
