The Gamm presents plays of substance and distinction, acted with excellence and offered to the public in an intimate setting that allows the audience to be immersed fully in the ambiance of the production and the interchange between the actors themselves, and between the actors and the audience. As the cornerstone of The Arts Exchange at the Pawtucket Armory, The Gamm seeks to engage and enrich the community through affordable entertainment and educational programming.
History:
The Gamm was founded in 1984 as Alias Stage by seven members of the graduating class of Trinity Rep Conservatory. They performed as an artistic collective in two abandoned mill buildings in Providence's Olneyville section until 1993 when they relocated to the Jewelry District. In 1998, the theater accepted a naming gift from the Feinstein Family Trust, in honor of the late actress and arts supporter Sandra Feinstein-Gamm. The theater began to outgrow its 75-seat house as it gained popularity. The Gamm proposed to the City of Pawtucket that the abandoned Pawtucket National Guard Armory be used as a regional center for arts and arts education, with The Gamm as lead tenant. The city accepted the proposal and a separate non-profit corporation, called the Pawtucket Armory Association (PAA), was formed in October 2000 to establish The Arts Exchange. Meanwhile, untenable overhead in Providence and increasing financial pressures forced The Gamm to announce an hiatus following its first production of the 2002-2003 season. The theater vacated its Elbow Street location, moving its administration and equipment to temporary offices in Pawtucket. At the same time, it began planning its rebirth, hosting a first-ever fundraiser in May 2003. The Gamm opened its new home in a beautifully renovated annex of the Pawtucket Armory in late November 2003, just in time for the holiday staging of A Child's Christmas in Wales.
