The purpose of Westerly Area Rest Meals WARM Inc. is to prevent or alleviate homelessness; to help people build self-esteem and move toward independent and responsible living.
Description:
Westerly Area Rest Meals, Inc. (WARM) offers a nineteen bed shelter with space for 13 men, 6 women and a soup kitchen that provides two meals per day, seven days per week, to the public (lunch 12 -1, dinner 5:30 - 6:30). We also have an Attire for Hire center. Residents who stay in our shelter are provided with daily case management.
History:
WARM has provided meals and shelter since 1987. Starting with three area churches as shelter sites, WARM expanded in the third month of operation to six churches in R.I. and one in CT., rotating as host one night a week. In it's first three years, the shelter was open from late fall to late spring, and during the summer months meals were available every night at an eighth church. The present building was purchased and renovated in 1990 - WARM became the only shelter in the service area providing a soup kitchen for the community on a year round basis.
