South County Habitat for Humanity is an affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International serving the Washington County area of Rhode Island. Our mission is to eliminate substandard housing by building and rehabilitating homes that are affordable to low-income individuals and families from the local community.
Description:
Habitat for Humanity's work depends upon the generosity of our volunteers and supporters. All of our homes are built by volunteers from the local community in partnership with the homeowners and Habitat construction staff. Volunteers also help "behind the scenes" by raising money, supplying refreshments, planning & organizing special events, publishing our newsletter, creating projects for youth, and pre-qualifying applicants for homeownership just to name a few.
History:
South County Habitat for Humanity was founded in 1990 by local people who were concerned about the lack of affordable housing in their community. Our first house was completed in 1992. Since that time, South County Habitat has built or renovated 39 homes in partnership with low-income families and individuals, and we have involved thousands of South County residents in this effort.
