Amos House is an organization providing hospitality and direct services to the homeless and poor of Rhode Island. Amos House works in collaboration with other agencies and groups to address issues of hunger, homelessness and poverty.
Description:
More than 2 million meals have been served at Amos House since it opened in 1976. On a busy day, our dining hall serves 900 meals to our hungry friends and neighbors. Amos House provides safe, transitional and permanent housing to hundreds of people each year. Our Social Services office provides assistance in the areas of health care, housing and emergency assistance. The Amos House Culinary Education Program, ACE, develops participants' culinary skills while helping to feed children at the local Boys and Girls Club. And our new micro business Amos House Works! employs our ACE program graduates while providing meals to some of our local charter schools. Please visit our website for more details about our many programs and services!
History:
Amos House was founded as a house of hospitality in 1976 by Sister Eileen Murphy. It is a haven that welcomes the poor and provides safety, food and fellowship. It is named after the Old Testament prophet, Amos, who preached against social injustice.
