The Met School, Metropolitan Career & Technical Center, is a system of six small public high schools enrolling 700 students from across Rhode Island. As a non-traditional, internship based school, The Met challenges students to pursue their passions through real-world learning experiences and unpaid internships, where they discover the kind of hands-on learning that is impossible to teach in the classroom. Featured in Newsweek in May of 2005 as one of America's most innovative high schools, the Met believes that school and real life shouldn't be separated.
Description:
The Met has been operating a successful internship program since its opening in 1996. We have placed students in over 1750 internships in community businesses, non-profits,and government settings where they have worked in individualized placements with mentors. Prior to placing a student at an internship, we typically have several students interview with the prospective mentor and then return for a shadow day. We do this in order for both the student and the mentor to make an informed decision about the placement.
History:
The Met has one of the highest graduation rates in the state: 94.2% (2004-2005 school year). Out of the 100% of students that are accepted to college, 75% of them are the first in their family to attend.
