Job Corps is America’s largest and most comprehensive youth training program. Our mission is to teach students the skills they need to become employable independent adults and place them in meaningful jobs or further education. We guide our students to success through planning, improved academic and vocational competencies, enhanced social skills and increased employability.
Description:
Job Corps is a residential youth development program combining academic instruction and career technical training. Our students are also educated in the areas of marketable skills, independent living, personal habits and social manners. Our graduates must meet the high Career Success Standards required by Job Corps. Students gain skills and knowledge through classroom instruction, community service and hands-on practical learning environments. Our newest support service for our students is the STARS program. The STARS program provides students with every opportunity for achievement through Speakers, Tutors, Achievement, Retention and Success. At this time, this program is seeking volunteers to tutor and mentor our students.
History:
Job Corps was established by the Economic Opportunity Act of 1964 as part of the Johnson Administration’s War on Poverty. Over two million youth have been successfully trained through Job Corps. There are currently 122 Job Corps centers nationwide that serve over 60,000 students annually. The Exeter Job Corps Academy celebrated its grand opening November 9, 2004, making it one of the newest Job Corps centers in the country. Exeter Job Corps is built to accommodate 200 residential students, is fully handicap-accessible, and features an education and training building, a three-wing dormitory, student union, library, gym, cafeteria and auditorium.
