Judy's Kindness Kitchen

[ View Opportunities ]
Last updated on August 27, 2008

Our mission is to establish a soup kitchen that: provides warm, nourishing meals to people in need; strengthens our Providence community by encouraging members of different groups to work together to fill a need; secures funding and a broad volunteer commitment to assure sustainability over the long-term.

Description:
Judy's Kindness Kitchen is a weekly soup kitchen run completely by volunteers. Lunches are prepared each Sunday morning at Congregation Beth Sholom and served at Crossroads RI. Volunteers can help prepare the food at Congregation Beth Sholom from 8:30-10:30 am, and/or help serve at Crossroads RI from 10:20-11:45 We welcome volunteers of all backgrounds, religions and ages. Children ages 8-15 are welcome to help prepare sandwiches with their parents and those 16 years old and older can work alongside adults to serve meals at Crossroads RI.

History:
Located at Congregation Beth Sholom, an Orthodox Jewish synagogue, Judy's Kindness Kitchen was started by concerned volunteers who recognized that very few soup kitchens served meals on Sunday. The soup kitchen, which opened Thanksgiving weekend 2004, made the move to serving Sunday lunch at Crossroads RI about a year later, to better serve the large number of homeless people and needy families at Crossroads with nowhere to eat on Sundays.
