The Museum of Yachting is devoted to preserving the culture and heritage of yachting by fostering education and enjoyment in its traditions and history through the presentation of vessels, artifacts, literature, programs and events.
Description:
The Museum explores and documents the many ways in which yachting demonstrates human achievement in technology, science, design and the arts as well as its importance as a cultural phenomenon. The spectacular seaside location in Newport includes a large boat basin for the in-water display of exhibit vessels. This center of maritime history and culture depends on its loyal family of volunteers to staff the front desk, maintain Museum vessels and help with special events such as the annual Classic Yacht Regatta. Located at Fort Adams State Park and open May through October, the Museum's entire first floor is handicap accessible. There is ample free parking.
History:
In August of 1980, the Museum of Yachting was dedicated to the preservation of the culture and heritage of yachting. Its home in an historic building on the grounds of Fort Adams State Park houses 12,000 square feet of exhibit space, a library and archive, and Museum gift shop, and an exhibit basin for the in-water display of Museum vessels.
