The Washington County Coalition for Children is comprised of organizations that provide services to the region's children and families as well as interested community members. Our Mission is to be a voice that advocates for the health and well-being of children and families in Washington County, serving as catalyst and facilitator for improved services.
Description:
The Washington County Coalition for Children is comprised of organizations that provide services to the region's children and families as well as interested community members. We are community-based. We bring people together across the county to document needs and address priority issues for children and families. We currently have initiatives to address these 5 priorities: Children's Mental Health - Identifying needs and making recommendations to address those needs - CATCH (Community Access to Child Health) Initiative. Parent Education & Support - Increasing the number of foster homes in Washington County and expanding parent support services in an effort to avoid placements - Family Support Council. Affordable Housing - collaborating in regional planning to increase the supply of affordable housing and improving access to information about housing and other resources through a web-based clearinghouse - Washington County Regional Planning Council-Housing Advisory Subcommittee. Child Care & After-School Programming - Increasing staff training and capacity to provide child care and after-school programming to children with special needs - Child Care and After-School Programming Work Group. Prenatal Care - Ensuring that women in Westerly receive adequate prenatal care - Delayed Prenatal Care Work Group.
History:
Formed in 1996 as part of the RI Dept. of Health's Family Outreach Program, the Coalition has been working over the past 4 years to fill in gaps in services for children and families in Washington County. Our work has been driven by collaborative processes including a comprehensive needs assessment, community forums, and on-going work groups to address priority issues.
