The Neighborhood Networks Center [NNC] is a federally-funded computer learning center which provides computer access and instruction to residents of the Newport Housing Authority, the award winning mixed income community of Newport Heights and Newport's North End.
Description:
The Neighborhood Networks Center makes technology available to residents who otherwise may have little or no opportunity to learn or use computers. The NNC’s programs and services seek to provide residents with skills and resources that will increase their employment options. At present, the NNC offers adults instruction in basic computer usage and Microsoft Office applications in addition to providing email and internet access. After school and summer programs are also available for school-age children. We are seeking volunteers to staff a newly created satellite NNC location at our Senior Center. This position involves assisting seniors with computer use 10 - 20 hours per week. We also need volunteers to work with our steering committee on developing resources and sustainability planning to ensure that the NNC will be able to continue to provide computer access and education for years to come. Either of these opportunities could also be Americorps*VISTA positions which include a monthly stipend and education award.
History:
HUD created Neighborhood Networks in 1995 to encourage property owners to establish multi-service community learning centers in HUD insured and assisted properties. Neighborhood Networks was one of the first federal initiatives to promote self-sufficiency and help provide computer access to low-income housing communities.
