Adopt A Doctor is a Rhode Island-based 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that seeks to improve access to basic health care in the world's poorest nations by reversing the brain drain that is drawing physicians away from these countries.
Description:
We intend to reverse the brain drain by providing financial incentives for physicians to stay in their countries and practice medicine. Our target nations currently include Malawi, Haiti, Liberia, and Sierra Leone. Specifically, we will double or triple a physician's monthly salary contingent upon their agreement to remain in their country for at least 7 years. In Liberia, where there are currently just 25 doctors for a population of 3.5 million people, we hope to double the number of physicians in the country within 2 years. We hope to have similarly dramatic effects on the health care system in our other target nations.
History:
Adopt A Doctor was founded in June 2003 in Providence by Ray Rickman and Rajiv Kumar.
