 During times of natural or man-made disasters, the Rhode Island Chapter,American Red Cross is called upon to assist communities by opening "safe havens" for residents. These shelters need a variety of positions to function. The positions include: registration, set up, communications (HAM radio), mass feeding, public information officer, security, health & mental health services and entertainment of both the very young and the older clientele. We train at no cost to you, and hold exercises twice a year in the shelters. You volunteer in your own community (Providence, Newport, Richmond, North Kingstown, etc) with friends and neighbors. Please call for more information. We need your help!! Volunteers must be at least 16 years of age unless volunteering as a family. Volunteers must undergo a BCI check.
