The Emergency Response Team is a group of senior volunteers that address Homeland Security needs of the community. They work regularly with the Pawtucket Emergency Management Agency, Rhode Island Red Cross, the Pawtucket Police Academy, and the Citizens Emergency Response Team. They provide immediate support to the police and fire departments during an emergency. During a house fire, for example, the volunteer would work with the victims to get them the resources they need, such as food, clothing, etc. The team is responsible for opening, maintaining and closing a shelter when the need arises in the community. They worked in shelters in Pawtucket and Central Falls in October during the flooding period. Team members have served hundreds of disaster victims. One of the team members went to Mississippi to assist with the Hurricane Katrina relief efforts. This is a very exciting opportunity with potential for great personal growth and satisfaction. Volunteers must be 55 years old or over. They will be trained by the Red Cross in Disaster Preparedness, CPR, First Aid and Shelter Management. Advanced training and training in grief counseling is also available. There is no cost to the volunteer. Applicants must complete an application and a background criminal check.
