Volunteering as a mentor is a wonderful and rewarding experience for both the mentor and the mentee. Mentors may decide what age group they wish to be matched with ranging from kindergarten through adults. Volunteer mentors may choose to spend one hour a week with a youngster on school grounds, during school time, or they may spend two hours or more through programs such as Big Brothers or Big Sisters in a community based setting. All mentors must complete an application, undergo screening and participate in interactive training sessions. References are necessary, as is a personal interview. Community based programs may require additional screening. Potential mentors attend a two hour workshop which focuses on policies and procedures, communication skills, activities and next steps. Additional (optional) training sessions based on mentor needs are offered throughout the year. Community based programs may require additional training.
