Literacy Volunteers on the Green provides free English as a second language and literacy instruction to adults in New Milford and its surrounding towns. Our goal is for our students to become independent speakers, listeners, readers and writers of English, allowing them to gain comprehension through natural, authentic, real life activities and experiences. We help adults to achieve their goals and build community connections through instruction provided by tutors who are recruited, trained and supported by our organization.

Description:
FOR STUDENTS:
Our organization targets non-English speaking adults, however we also provide literacy instruction to native speakers of English. We offer flexible class schedules based on the availability of students and tutors. Each student's needs are very individual. Some are not literate in their native language, while others are college graduates and have had professional careers in their countries of origin. Individual needs can be met because of our ability to offer small group instruction, one-on-one if necessary. We also offer a family literacy program, Motheread/Fatheread which provides encouragement, support and instruction to families and caregivers.

FOR TUTORS:
We offer two tutor training programs annually. Once our tutors are trained, they are matched with students, provided with tutoring venues and equipped with all necessary teaching aids and student materials. Our tutors receive support and continued training throughout the year by our organization.

History:
On March 7, 2005, Literacy Volunteers on the Green launched weekly ninety-minute classes that ranged in size from one-on-one to one tutor with five students. Since our inception, we have served over 300 students and trained more than 125 tutors. Today we conduct 40 classes a week in many area Litchfield towns.
