The Candlewood Lake Authority provides lake, shoreline and watershed management to foster the preservation and enhancement of recreational, economic, scenic, public safety and environmental values of the Lake for the City of Danbury and the Towns of Brookfield, New Fairfield, New Milford and Sherman in cooperation with the State of Connecticut and Northeast Utilities.
Description:
The Candlewood Lake Authority is a local quasi-governmental agency that serves the municipalities surrounding Candlewood Lake. We outfit and provide support for the CLA Marine Patrol which is empowered by the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection to enforce CT Boating Safety Law. We also assist the communities we serve in protecting the largest lake in Connecticut that provides substantial environmental resource and is one of the primary factors of the quality of life in the area.
History:
The Candlewood Lake Authority was created by identical ordinances in the five surrounding municipalities in 1972. The ordinance was revised in 1984. The offices of the CLA have always been located in the Sherman Town Park on the shore of the lake.
