The Danbury Animal Welfare Society's mission is to care for neglected, abused, stray and abandoned animals in the Greater Danbury area and to promote the humane treatment of animals.
Description:
We are a non-profit organization that has been aiding animals in the Greater Danbury area since 1974. We are run 85% volunteers and 15% paid part time staff. We have an ongoing budget of over $300,000.00. We receive our funding mostly through generous community contributions and various fund raising events. In 2003 we placed in wonderful adoptive homes over 500 dogs and cats. We also provide educational aid for people who have behavior questions regarding their pets. At our shelter, we care for 150 dogs and cats while they are waiting for their forever homes.
History:
Danbury Animal Welfare Society was founded in 1974 by a group of concerned citizens. At first all the adoptions were done out of their homes. During the 1980's, we were able to purchase our current building through the help of a generous trust. We have gone from rescuing a handful of animals to placing over 500 animals in loving homes in 2003. We have also included trapping, neutering and releasing of feral (wild) cats. We are one of the few local agencies that does this program.
