Our Mission is to provide decent, safe and sanitary Emergency Shelter to homeless adults and the social services needed to obtain the basic needs of food, shelter, clothing and income.
Description:
The City's shelter facility houses two distinct homeless programs, the night shelter and a day center. The day center is the community hub of social services for homeless adults. Several Community agencies provide on-site staff to meet social, mental health and medical needs. Persons who are homeless can access telephones, computers, shower and laundry facilities and they also have access to a full kitchen for individual or group meal preparation. The day center is staffed by a caseworker and we also employ temporary shelter aides from the homeless population to perform maintenance duties.
History:
The City of Danbury has operated an emergency shelter for homeless adults since 1990. This responsibility was assumed when the number of homeless individuals began to increase due to lack of affordable rooms and one bedroom apartments. Prior to the City's Shelter operations, the Dorothy Day shelter was the only permanent structure attempting to meet the needs of this particular population.
