To provide seniors and younger disabled persons with companionship, socialization, and connection to the larger community and to aid in comfortable and safe independent living.
Description:
Through matching trained and screened volunteers to area seniors and younger persons with disabilities, Friendly Visitors & Garden Angels offer helping hands and caring companionship to residents of Region 1 (Canaan, Kent, Falls Village, Sharon, Salisbury, Cornwall)and Norfolk, CT.
Often, in our rural territory, seniors and younger disabled persons become isolated, lonely and depressed. Friendly Visitors visit at least one hour each week and provide companionship and assistance with minor tasks such as reading the mail or writing letters.
History:
Operating from 1992 until 2004, Friendly Visitors coordinated over 35 successful matches. After a brief stint of inactivity, the program has been re-activated with the addition of Garden Angels, a volunteer-based program that provides seniors and younger disabled persons with help in maintaining or installing a small garden during the garden season.
