The mission of the DSABC is to encourage student achievement, lifelong learning, and the successful transition of youth and adult into higher education, the work force and society.
Description:
The Danbury Schools and Business Collaborative was launched in 1990 with 40 mentor/student matches. The program has grown to over 350 mentors that provide school-based mentoring to the 17 K-12 schools in the Danbury Public School system, as well as Henry Abbott Tech. The program's support structure includes school liaisons, school principals, and business liaisons. Mentors are supporting and caring adults who assist students to succeed in school by developing a one on one relationship and by providing moral support and encouragement and sometimes academic help to stay in school and graduate. Mentors are provided with the opportunity to contribute to their community through service. Mentors can choose the age of the student they wish to work with, and are encouraged to remain with that student for as long as possible. Students are selected to be part of the mentor program based on a variety of issues such as low self-esteem, shyness, parents who may not speak English making homework assistance difficult, or students who with a little extra attention can maximize their potential.
