Dorothy Day Hospitality House
Last updated on May 19, 2008

We are a community of people who care about our brothers and sisters providing love, food and rest. We provide food in the form of a kitchen; rest in the form of a shelter and love in the way we conduct ourselves. We accomplish this by living God's word; relying on our prayerful faith to provide donations to fit our means. In the event that our bounty is so great, we believe in sharing with other needy groups.

Description:
Our house is open every day and night of the year. The kitchen serves a hot meal and provides a lunch bag. The kitchen is open from 3:15pm to 4:45pm. The shelter provides emergency overnight shelter to any adult or family who come to our door. The shelter is open from 9:30pm to 6am and there is a 30 day limit per year. The only requirement is that the person needing food and/or shelter be sober enough to be able to provide hospitality to others.

History:
The Dorothy Day Hospitality House opened the kitchen in February 1982 and the shelter in November 1983. We are a volunteer organization and we depend on private donations to fund our work. When we first opened we served about 30 people a day in the kitchen. As of 2003, we serve an average of 90 people a day. Our shelter can sleep 17 guests and we are usually full.
