Realizing the difficulty some Danbury Youth will face, the mission of Harambee is to assist in the actualization of their educational, recreational, social, and personal goals. The Board of Directors will advocate for appropriate community response and provide services and programs that will address the needs of youth that will enhance their education and personal growth, community interaction, cultural and recreational needs.
Description:
Harambee is a recreational, educational, social and cultural program. We strive to make education a priority for its clients by providing educational components. Academic and college counseling for students entering higher education are offered also. Tutoring in all subject matters is available to youth and the adult community. Help is provided with college entrance examination preparation classes and SAT examinations. The center works with the courts, the school system and social services agencies on behalf of clients and their families.
History:
The Harambee program started in 1964 on New Street under the sponsorship of the Danbury Branch N.A.A.C.P. Later the sponsorship transferred to Interfaith Social Action, which was connected to the First Congregational Church, and eventually to Community Action Committee of Danbury. In 1992, the program was under the auspices of The Green Chimneys Children Services in Brewster, New York. Since 1997, The Harambee Center, Inc. acquired its own Non-profit 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status. The program moved around to various locations, Unitarian Universalist Church on Main Street; Spring Street; New Street; 400 Main Street; 401 Main Street; South Main Street, 40 Main Street; the basement of the First Congregational Church and for 7 years, the youth center's new home has been in the old armory building at 54 West Street in Danbury.
