The Department of Elderly Services seeks to increase the quality of life of Danbury area citizens who are age 50 or better through the use of social, educational, spiritual, physical, creative, intergenerational, multicultural, and animal/nature programs. It is our goal to put an end to boredom, helplessness, and hopelessness through outreach and innovative and spontaneous program offerings.

Description:
Social, recreational, educational, physical, creative, intergenerational, multicultural, animal/nature programs. Also, outreach to homebound, concrete services (benefits assistance, rent rebate, CONNPace, Medicare, resource and referral, tax preparation assistance, computer courses/computer lab designed for seniors, drop-in center, CARES (Coalition of Agencies Related to Elderly Services), 911 cell phones, durable medical equipment, and advocacy. Also, Commission on Aging and Prime Timers, Inc., Friends of Danbury Seniors.

History:
In 1974 under Mayor Ducibella a Commission on Aging was formed. Soon the Commission applied for Title III funding to began the first Danbury Senior Center in the lower level of Ives Manor on Main Street. In 1978 the center began a full-time operation with seed monies from Northwestern Connecticut Area Agency on Aging. A full-time director and coordinator were hired. In 1984, a the "Old Jail" at 80 Main Street was remodeled, and this became the Danbury Senior Center which eventually evolved into the Department of Elderly Services. The department consists of three programs, the Senior Center, the Municipal Agent's Office and the SeniorNet Computer Center. 2003 marked the completion of a new building, Elmwood Hall, which hosts the new Danbury Senior Center. The municipal agent's office and SeniorNet remain in the Old Jail buildings. Progress is being made to create a senior campus with the additional of an attached building to Elmwood Hall that will soon house the municipal agent and seniornet so all senior resources will be housed under one roof.

Directions:

Traveling I-84 East: Take exit 5. At the end of the ramp, go straight onto Downs Street to the traffic light. At the light turn right onto Main Street. Stay on Main Street through approximately seven traffic lights. At this time you will see Walgreen's Pharmacy on the left and our old senior center, The Old Jail building on the right. You will also see the medical clinic just after the jail, also on the right. Elmwood Place is immediately after the medical clinic on the same side. A sign for the "Elmwood Hall Senior Center" is clearly visible. Turn right into Elmwood Place and we are the large, brick building on the left. Parking is on the left hand side of road, next to the senior center building. Traveling I-84 West: Take exit 5. At the end of the ramp, at the light, take a right onto North Main Street. Follow around (North Main becomes Main Street) and go straight through approximately eight traffic lights.
