Friends of the Lake is a non-profit group of concerned citizens who care about the management, safety and recreational uses of Lake Lillinonah and wish to develop a lake community to encourage the continued protection of its natural beauty and wildlife.
Description:
We will work closely with the Lake Lillinonah Authority, elected officials and residents of the bordering towns to increase awareness, foster stewardship and solicit additional funding for prioritized projects in order to reduce debris and pollution so that we may protect and maintain the quality of Lake Lillinonah now and for the future.
History:
For many years the water quality of Lake Lillinonah has been severely impacted by algae blooms during the warm summer months when recreational use by the bordering land owners and public should be at its most active time. However, the algae blooms often form a green soup or slime which constantly grows and decomposes with foul odors during the warm, low flow summer season. This renders the Lake unfit for the use and enjoyment by the public.
It is common knowledge that this impaired water resource suffers algae blooms due to an infusion of nutrients (primarily phosphorus and nitrogen compounds) from both non-point stormwater and point source pollution. It is postulated that a significant loading of nutrients to the lake is the result of the Still River contribution (draining the greater Danbury area) to the Lake Lillinonah watershed.
Friends of the Lake has retained Hydro Technologies, Inc. to provide a minimal, yet scientifically significant, analytes to be tested a critical locations at the Still River corridor.
All results will be tabulated in a spreadsheet format with written report. Electronic and written copies of tables, text and graphs would be completed and available by March 15, 2004
