Save the Sound is dedicated to the restoration, protection, and appreciation of Long Island Sound and its watershed through advocacy, education and research.

Description:
Save the Sound strives for goals similar to those of the Clean Water Act; to restore and maintain the chemical, physical, and biological integrity of the waters. We work closely with a variety of entities in order to achieve these goals, including (but not limited to) federal and state agencies, civic and conservation groups, teachers, students, grade schools, universities, individuals and municipalities. Using advocacy, we promote policies that protect the Sound and it's watershed, and take defensive legal action at the federal, state and local levels. By performing and analyzing research, we improve the understanding of the condition of the Sound and it's relationship to it's watershed. We also educate the general public about the important connection between the Sound and it's watershed, while inspiring them to be stewards of their environment. Lastly, but certainly not least, we support and use habitat restoration to restore degraded habitats in the Sound and it's watershed through collaborative efforts with landowners, public and private organizations, and the general public.

History:
Save the Sound is funded by membership contributions, individual and corporate donations, foundations and government grants. The organization was originally founded in 1972 as the Long Island Sound Taskforce and was first affiliated with the Sierra Club, then the Oceanic Society. The name was changed to Save the Sound in 1995 to better express the organization's mission and to serve as a call to action. In September of 2004 Save the Sound merged with Connecticut Fund for the Environment to strengthen its infrastructure and advocacy presence.
