History:
The American Red Cross foundation was laid in 1859 when Swiss businessman Henri Dunant observed first- hand the atrocities of war when 40,000 troops were killed or wounded on Northern Italian battle fields. He wrote about his experiences in "A Memory of Solferino" prompting wide spread attention to the need for world wide humanitarian relief. His concern was shared and the International Committee of the Red Cross was born. Dunant's ideas also led to the development of the Geneva Conventions. His vision would eventually reach a woman named Clara Barton, who was active as a nurse during the Civil War. She persuaded the U.S. government to sign the Geneva Conventions and founded the American Association of the Red Cross on May 21,1881.
