History:
Claudette A. Tallon and James H. Waddington founded Voluntary Services for the Blind of Fairfield County in 1993 with the financial assistance of the Darien Lions Club and some private individuals. It functioned as a project of the Darien Lions Club Foundation from 1993 until 1996 when it became an independent 501(c)(3) corporation. The organization provides visually impaired residents of Fairfield County with volunteers who perform basic services such as reading, driving, shopping and clerical assistance to assist their clients lead independent lives. From just an idea in 1993, the program has grown to provide these critical services to approximately 150 visually impaired clients annually with a similar number of volunteers. The volunteers have been logging in aggregate more than 9000 direct service hours annually. This excludes administrative time, which is also voluntary. There are no paid employees. Since inception, more than 78,000 volunteer hours have been logged in service to our clients.
