The Bartlett Arboretum & Gardens mission is to:
*Display gardens and landscapes that focus on the regional plants, ecology and character of Southwestern New England.
*Demonstrate, through the design of its exhibits and gardens and the management of its property, the possibilities of living in an environmentally responsible manner in harmony with the natural world.
*Provide the public of all ages with opportunities for hands-on education, cultural growth, enjoyment, recreation and entertainment.

Description:
The Bartlett Arboretum & Gardens is an historic 91-acre property embracing horticultural diversity in its woodlands, wetlands, and gardens, as well as living collections and unique specimens of trees. This dynamic year-round facility is an asset to area residents and visitors, whom it draws to its collections and programming from both the growing metropolis of Stamford and neighboring Fairfield and Westchester counties.

History:
The Bartlett Arboretum & Gardens was the home and research facility for the Bartlett Tree Expert Company prior to 1965. In 1965 the property was about to be sold to developers, but a group of local citizens banded together and raised approximately half of the money for purchasing the land. Federal and state funds made up the rest and because of the State of Connecticut's involvement, it was decided that governance should be placed in the most appropriate state agency. The property then became the Bartlett Arboretum, and served the public by offering educational opportunities in gardening and the natural world under the auspices of the University of Connecticut. In 2001, ownership was transferred to the city of Stamford and governance of the Arboretum to the Bartlett Arboretum Association. The Arboretum then changed its name to "Bartlett Arboretum & Gardens" to better reflect the range of horticultural experiences offered by the institution.
