The Nathaniel Witherell Volunteers assist the medical and professional staffs through a variety of activities. They enhance and enrich the daily lives of the 202 residents and they discover their service is very appreciated.

Description:
There are a number of areas in which volunteers are active. Volunteers staff the gift shop, escort residents to physical therapy and the beauty shop, and help out at many recreation activities. They also care for the plants in residents' rooms, visit one-on-one, and make the five weekly worship services available to residents. Morning, afternoon and weekend opportunities exist.

History:
The Nathaniel Witherell has its roots in a small 61 bed hospital built by the Town of Greenwich in 1933 and renamed in 1946 in honor of Nathaniel Witherell, whose widow donated a nurses' residence on the Parsonage Road grounds. At that time volunteer work was done by a small group of Greenwich ladies who visited the hospital informally to help with the residents. In 1955, The Nathaniel Witherell was designated by the Town as a nursing facility for geriatric residents and for the chronically ill and one year later, The Nathaniel Witherell Auxiliary was incorporated as its volunteer group. The facility has undergone two (2) major expansions in 1961 and 1975 to now accommodate the 202 residents it serves. In 2007, the Auxiliary was merged into the newly formed fund-raising arm, Friends of Nathaniel Witherell, Inc., and today is known simply as Nathaniel Witherell Volunteers.
