Senior Services of Stamford helps Stamford older persons to live more independent, secure, and fulfilled lives in a spirit of personal caring and concern.
Description:
Senior Services of Stamford provides information, referrals, counseling, advocacy and emergency help to Stamford older persons in crisis situations or with special needs. It sponsors the Over 60 Club, which is open 12-4 weekdays and welcomes all Stamford older persons. It awards grants to community programs which benefit older persons. It coordinates PIES (Stamford Partnership for Elderly Services), an umbrella group of service providers Recently, Senior Services has taken over the Friendly Visitors and Shoppers Program which matches volunteers with homebound seniors.
History:
Senior Services of Stamford, a private foundation, was established in 1908 and known until 1972 as the Stamford Home for the Aged. It was founded by Stamford citizens concerned about the welfare of their older neighbors in an era long before Social Security and Medicare. The organization changed over the years to meet emerging needs and today strives to assist those who slip through the safety net of public programs.
