The Stamford Historical Society is a non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation, conservation and interpretation of the history of Stamford, Connecticut and the Greater Stamford area. Through exhibitions, workshops and programs SHS seeks to connect all Stamford citizens with the history of the community in which they live. The Society values the history of all periods, groups, and peoples equally and does not discriminate by race, nationality or religious belief.
History:
The Society was formed in 1901 and incorporated in 1909. We presently operate two locations in Stamford. The 1699 Hoyt Barnum House located at 713 Bedford Street is used primarily for educational purposes with an active program on colonial life offered to second and fourth grade students. These programs are offered via volunteer docents. The headquarters of the organization are located at 1508 High Ridge Road. The headquarters building houses a research library for use by visitors with the assistance of volunteer research librarians. A large Photo Collection is also housed here and copy photographs are available for a fee. Exhibits are presented during the year. An example of past exhibit subjects are the Leuders Boat Yard, Women of Influence, Stamford in World War II, Digging Up Stamford,Civil War participation,Technology, and Samplers and Quilts from our collections. An Immigration Program is offered both here and off site for third and fifth grade students. The Immigration program covers the period of 1845 through the 1930's here in Stamford. The program is an outgrowth of the Cultural Mosaic lectures presented at the UConn Stamford Branch in 1999. We have an active website: www.stamfordhistory.org which provides information about our activities and collections. The website presents virtual tours of our most recent exhibits and a Photo of the Month presentation done by the webmaster and research and photo collection volunteer staff. Volunteers work with staff in researching and mounting all of our exhibits.
