Today's Stamford YMCA welcomes all members of the greater Stamford community regardless of sex, race, religion or income. At the center of the YMCA's culture has been a commitment to providing skill building programs and activities that help Stamford's inner city youth develop their personal values including respect for themselves and their peers, regard for all adults and property. Our emphasis on youth work has enabled us to showcase two special initiatives: The award winning L.E.A.D. program (an acronym, which stands for Leadership, Enrichment, Acceptance and Development) focuses on building the total person with activities that develop a healthy spirit, mind and body.
Description:
In the early years the Y emphasize religion and morals with a particular focus on temperance and as our name made clear, the Association was for young Christian men. But today Association efforts are families, single adults, children and youth of all ages. Our programs begin with early childhood skill building and socialization (water babies and childcare) and evolve to after school recreation (basketball leagues, swimming lessons, as well as state licensed after school care) and to teen leadership programs. Physical fitness programs abounds in the comprehensive health and fitness facility in the community, whether one is training in the cardiovascular fitness center or participating in the senior arthritis swim program. This Y presented the cutting edge of fitness programming by introducing aerobic and cardiovascular programming into the state of Connecticut. Today's Stamford YMCA welcomes all members of the greater Stamford community regardless of age, sex, race, religion or income. The Y operates an affordable transient housing program using 132 rooms available on six floors. In the 1997 the housing program experienced 46,357 bed nights serving both men and women working in the Stamford area.
History:
Nearly one hundred thirty four years ago, a small group of young men met to organize a YMCA in Stamford. It would become the fourth in Connecticut and one of the first to shift its focus from evangelistic purposes to a broader human development mission. In these many years the definition of YMCA work has taken many forms and guided generations of Stamford residents through the skill building human development programs for which it has gained its reputation.
