Volunteers are needed to assist residents of Fairfield Court in Stamford with packing in preparation to vacate their apartments. Family Centers' Case Managers will help to coordinate volunteers with individual households that are in need. Case Managers will also provide on site support and supervision during the process. HOPE VI is a major HUD (Housing and Urban Development) plan meant to revitalize the worst public housing projects into mixed-income developments. The Stamford Housing Authority received a $20 million dollar grant from HUD to revitalize Fairfield Court. Fairfield Court will be replaced with 4 new developments, all located on the West Side of Stamford. Each of the new developments will be "service enriched", also referred to as "supportive housing" and will meet the needs of the population. The residents are in the process of choosing their new site depending on their individual needs and where they can best receive services to meet them. The residents also have the option to leave public housing and instead receive a Section 8 voucher, allowing them to seek privately owned rental units with a subsidy. While this is going on, Family Centers is overseeing the "Community and Supportive Services" (CSS) Program in which every household is assigned a case manager to provide them with ongoing support. Family Centers has worked with the Fairfield Court resident population as well as the Stamford Housing Authority for the past three years on this project and will continue to provide support even after everyone has relocated.
This opportunity is available Monday through Friday during regular working hours, but evening hours can be arranged on a case by case basis. Teen volunteers are welcome for this opportunity, but must be accompanied by an adult. Interested volunteers should be able to do light lifting for this position.
