CHUM (Choosing to Help Unleash Magic) for Job Seekers
Last updated on March 5, 2008
Logo

The Giving Tree needs a few committed volunteers to help with our job program, GEAR (Gain Employment and Respect.) GEAR helps jobless men and women overcome barriers to employment such as not having identification, interview appropriate clothing, buss passes and so forth.

No experience is necessary to become a CHUM. Once matched with a client to mentor, you will meet your new friend one-on-one and assist with job searches. Under the direction of the Jobs Program Director, creative ways to overcome barriers to employment will be explored.

As a CHUM, you will be a support system for the client. The hours are flexible, but a 6 month commitment is desired so that the client has time to build a trusting rapport with their CHUM. As a CHUM, you will have a chance to make a lasting change in a deserving person's life.

Consistency and compassion is important for our clients - to build rapport and so they understand that finally someone in their life cares that they "make it."

The minimum requirement to be a CHUM is the desire to positively change a stranger's life. The qualities most important to this position are compassion and patience. You can BE the biggest difference in the life an individual and their entire family by helping them overcome obstacles, old habits and helping them find a new way of being.

This is a very fun thing to do!!!!!!!
I am 9 years old. My family and I volunteer with the Giving Tree Feeding Program and we think it is very fun! We have met some very nice volunteers, and best of all, we have met some very nice homeless people, too! I love going there on Thursdays and Sundays!

I have gained a greater understanding of the needy.
Volunteering has made me gain a deeper appreciation for food, clothing, my bed, and everything else that I own. I would suggest everyone to volunteer their time to help the people in need. This program is well organized!

It was very rewarding
I volunteered with my sorority, Chi Omega. I gained the realization of what life is really like for some people. I also learned about different organizations within the Tucson community that work to help many people get back into a good state of life.
