Play Cards or Games with Hospice Patient
Last updated on July 1, 2008

Have you ever felt the tug in your heart to work with people who are dying? Have you ever experienced that sense of honor and privilege when spending time with a dying person? Maybe you have no experience at all, but a lot of interest, questions and a big heart!

Our volunteers are very special people from all walks of life who are sensitive to the needs of our patients and families who support our philosophy of supportive care. Our volunteers are individuals who respect and revere life and, in the performance of their volunteering, bring energy and enthusiasm to our patients, family members, and our care team. While most of our patients are in their homes or skilled nursing facility, some are in our new inpatient unit on Swan and River. Volunteers may choose to spend time at one or both places.

Volunteering is fun! Some volunteers take patients shopping or run errands for them, providing a much needed break for the caregiver at home.

There is a six-week training for this volunteering opportunity. Classes will be held on Thursday evenings from 5:30pm to 9:30pm throughout 2008. We will meet for six Thursdays to cover such topics as communication skills, spiritual dynamics of death and dying, caring for the caregiver, bereavement, hospice social service issues and more.

If this sounds like what you've been waiting for, please contact the Hospice Family Care office at 790.9299 for a volunteer application, questionnaire and background check form. You can also learn more about us at www.hfc-az.com or www.hfcfaz.org

This is a 30-hour training that meets one time per week for six weeks at our offices near Speedway and Wilmot. There is no cost for training or materials but you must be 16 years of age or older and have turned in an application and questionnaire. The amount of time a graduate volunteer decides to give is up to you!
