Community Home Repair needs volunteers to help with emergency home repairs for low-income members of our community. We get numerous calls every day from people faced with critical housing situations, and we try our best to respond quickly and effectively. Common situations include broken water lines, gas lines, broken coolers or furnaces, backed-up drains, electrical problems and leaking roofs. We also build wheelchair ramps for people with disabilities, as well as grab-bars, tub rails and other safety hardware. Most of our clients are elderly, disabled, or female-headed households with young children. We can provide on-the-job training for volunteers that come on a regular basis. Volunteers will be sent out in teams of at least two, and do not have to be expert tradespeople, but should be physically able to work an 8 or 9 hour day. We work Monday through Thursday, though a volunteer can arrange to come in only one or two days per week or on an occasional basis. We foster respectful, trustful and caring relationships with clients and workers. Volunteers should bring water, lunch and wear work clothes and boots or sturdy shoes.
