The Chehote District seeks to reflect the diversity of the urban neighborhoods and communities that it serves and to use that strength to enhance family satisfaction and enrich the Scouting experience for all participants.
Description:
The Chehote District of the Great Smoky Mountain Council, BSA is mostly located within the Knoxville, Tennessee Empowerment Zone (EZ) but also includes other areas inside and outside of the I-640 loop. The Chehote District gives special leadership and emphasis to urban Scouting programs. The Chehote District is the Great Smoky Mountain Council’s commitment to making sure that all young people have an opportunity to join Scouting, regardless of their circumstances, neighborhood, or ethnic background. Today, young people are faced with many challenges as they often live in fragile families and disintegrating neighborhoods. Scouting meets the developmental needs of youth in diverse urban settings. Scouting, by emphasizing ethics and moral values, addresses many of the social concerns of parents and youth in our community. Scouting prepares urban youth to be leaders, to accept responsibility, and to care about principles and causes beyond their own self-interest. Our biggest asset in urban neighborhoods is a well-defined program based on values, learning-by-doing, fun, and positive role models. It is the mission of the Boy Scouts of America to help other people by instilling values in young people. To accomplish this, the Chehote District will ensure that culturally diverse youth have the opportunity to join and both fully participate in and benefit from the Scouting program by recruiting, training, and retaining strong adult leaders, and by identifying and developing solid relationships with community/charter organizations throughout Knoxville and Knox County.
