Second Harvest Food Bank

Last updated on June 17, 2008

Second Harvest fights hunger by providing food, services and education in our 18-county community.

Description:
Second Harvest distributes food to more than 350 Food Partner Agencies. These agencies serve meals to hungry people in our 18 county area. Last year Second Harvest distributed enough food for 7,000,000 meals. We estimate that we are currently only reaching about 1/3rd of the people living in hunger in our community.

History:
Second Harvest Food Bank of East Tennessee was started in 1982 when some concerned community citizens saw a need in the community to gather surplus food for the hungry.

During the first year of operation, Second Harvest, then called SHARE, distributed approximately 120,000 pounds to less than 30 human service agencies in Knox County. Last fiscal year, we distributed more than 8.1 million pounds of food to 350-plus agencies in 18 counties.
