Help with Habitat!
Last updated on March 7, 2008

We rely greatly on the generosity of caring volunteers and offer numerous opportunities for involvement, such as:

Budget Tutors: A requirement of the program is that all potential homeowners attend budget classes. Budget tutors teach a very basic, holistic budget balancing class.

Construction: Work on the job-site on Tuesday, Thursday and/or Saturday. (Must be at least 16 years of age.)

Family Selection Committee: This committee processes applications, documents income, explains the unique partnership with Habitat for Humanity to applicants, does home visits and makes recommendations of applicants to the Board of Directors.

Family Partnership Committee: The objectives of this committee are to identify obstacles to success for future Habitat for Humanity homeowners and help them to overcome these obstacles. Volunteers conduct orientation for approved applicants and guide them for the first few months of the program.

Heart & Soul Interiors: A new program of creativity and community building centered around a series of workshops for self-reflection and creative expression using low-cost techniques for symbolic home decor.

Homeowner Construction Class Leaders: Need basic construction skills (measure, hammer, use power tools) and the patience and ability to teach these skills. Five-week class with curriculum.

Paint Crew: Help paint interiors of homes under construction. Volunteers should be able to commit to working at least one Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday per month.

Thrift Store: Volunteers are needed to greet customers, sort and price incoming donations, display merchandise and run the cash register.

Wednesday/Thursday Construction Crew: This is a dedicated group of people who assist our construction staff on the job-site during the week. Work as your schedule permits, no experience required.

Work Groups: Bring out a group of people to volunteer on the job-site or at the Thrift Store.

Volunteers choose the amount of time they want to give. Some work once a month, some twice a week. It is up to you. You do not have to be experienced to fill any volunteer position, and on the construction site, we require no prior knowledge of construction. There will be opportunities for you to learn skills.

Interested people should fill out an application online at www.knoxvillehabitatforhumanity.com. Contact Trudy Akers for more information.
