Charlotte County Council On Aging
[ View Opportunity ]
Last updated on May 14, 2008

The Charlotte County Council on Aging operates for the advancement of programs for senior citizens. Specifically:
To provide direct service to seniors through community programs;
To work with governmental and other human service agencies to recommend programs that address unmet needs of the elderly;
To act as a resource for area seniors and their families; and
To increase understanding, both of the real nature of the aging process, and of the aging individual.

Description:
The Charlotte County Council on Aging (COA) has undergone tremendous changes in the last year. The most important change has been a completely new staff that has revitalized the organization, inside and out. The new staff at COA has overhauled all administrative and program processes, allowing more clients to be served, both through increased productivity and new programs.

The nature of COA's assistance to seniors is coordination of services. Whether our staff is scheduling rides for seniors, matching a caregiver, helping a senior understand the Medicare Prescription drug plan, or counseling the adult child of an ailing senior about how to investigate assisted living facilities, the coordination of services is a direct service provided by a person.

History:
In 1977, The Council On Aging (COA) was first proposed by Dr. Robert Shedd, a Punta Gorda physician and Charlotte County Commissioner, as an advisory council for the County Commission.

Mrs. Rebecca “Neal” Owens served as Chairperson and helped develop many of the programs that continue to serve area seniors today.

Two years later in 1979, the COA was incorporated as a private, non-profit organization. We continue to serve the senior citizens of Charlotte County by assessing needs and working to find solutions to challenges facing today’s senior population.

As long as there are senior citizens in need, the Charlotte County Council On Aging stands ready to help.
