Volunteers of America, Dakotas is a nonprofit, spiritually based organization that reaches out to empower people of all ages to become healthier, self-sufficient and productive members in their communities.

For more than 85 years, Volunteers of America, Dakotas has been serving those who need us the most. Troubled youth, families without child care, those struggling against addiction, the adolescent who can't return home can all turn to our supportive and empowering programs. We work with the most vulnerable people in the Dakotas helping them rebuild whole lives, reach their potential and become productive members of our communities. We focus on bringing higher levels of care and safety though safe, nurturing environments where individuals and families become healthy and self-sufficient.

History:
Frank and Emma Tremont were asked to go to South Dakota to serve as chaplains for the SD State Penitentiary and to open a Volunteers of America storefront mission in 1920. Once in Sioux Falls, they soon realized the community had many working parents and needed a place to care for young children. They opened their home in 1923 for a 24/7 childcare.
No child was turned away because they could not pay. This is still a strong message today and with the support of the Sioux Empire United Way partnership and other foundations, we can make this happen in many of our programs here in Sioux Falls. Volunteers of America is one of the original 7 agencies supported by the Sioux Empire United Way since 1929.
Volunteers of America, Dakotas has met the challenge to be more efficient and effective and have expanded our services to helping adults, teenagers and their families when we merged with Turning Point of South Dakota (once Threshold and Turn-a-bout).
We have 30 locations in Sioux Falls and also located in Aberdeen, Eagle Butte, and Rapid City.
With 391 employees and 50 programs and services across the Dakotas we rely on nearly 600 volunteers to assist us with our mission. Volunteers share their expertise, time, and talents from being a board member or assisting with activities in one of our programs.

West 51st Street is just north of I-229. Turn west off of Minnesota Avenue, just south of 41st Street onto Grange Avenue. Take Grange to west 51st and turn left onto 51st. The Bollinger Center will be the first left on 51st street. |
