History:
Children's Home Society of South Dakota was established in 1893 by Elizabeth and William Sherrard. They opened their own home to abandoned, neglected and abused children. As the need for their services increased, a fund raising effort provided the landmark orphanage formerly located at 10th and Cliff in Sioux Falls. CHS served as South Dakota's principal orphanage until the late 1960's when foster care was introduced. The Board then decided to address needs of children with emotional and behavioral problems. Treatment centers were opened in Sioux Falls and the Black Hills.
