The mission of the National Kidney Foundation is to prevent kidney and urinary tract disease, improve the health and well being of individuals and families affected by these diseases, and increase the availability of all organs for transplantation.

Description:
The National Kidney Foundation of South Dakota is a statewide organization serving individuals from many areas. In addition to education, the NKF promotes Kidney Health through its KEEP (Kidney Early Evaluation Program) screenings. The National Kidney Foundation is the grandfather of the organ donation checkbox on drivers licenses throughout the world.

The NKF provides referral, emergency assistance programs, nutritional education and support to patients with Kidney Disease. The two leading causes of Chronic Kidney Failure(CKD) are Diabetes and High Blood Pressure. The NKF of South Dakota helps to promote healthy control of those already diagnosed, and to educate the public regarding the warning signs.

Through its organ donation initiatives, the NKF provides donor education, living donor and grief donorship.
Organ donation cards are distributed at all NKF activities.

History:
The National Kidney Foundation of South Dakota opened its office in Sioux Falls in May of 2000. Although a one paid staff organization, the NKF is very active with the help of volunteer support. The NKF is not funded through United Way, state, county, or federal sources at this time. The NKF relies totally on public support.
