The AmeriCorps Victim Assistance Program (AVAP) addresses critical public safety needs through community service and promotes a lifetime commitment to volunteerism. The AmeriCorps Victim Assistance Program is a multi-agency collaboration to ensure direct services are available to victims of domestic and sexual violence and stalking. AVAP provides members with an experience that instills a commitment to civic engagement and responsibility. Direct Services are based on an empowerment model of advocacy and support for each victim’s choices. Program design is responsive to local community needs in development of services, sites for member placement and recruitment of a diverse member corps.
Description:
AmeriCorps Victim Assistance Program advocates assist victims of domestic and sexual violence and stalking. Advocates are placed at crisis centers, police departments, prosecutor’s offices, child advocacy centers, and on college and university campuses. Job Qualifications: 18 years of age or older, commitment to community service, interest in the issues of domestic and sexual violence, ability to be non-judgmental, no prior experience necessary Full and part-time positions available. Advocates provide support and education to victims/survivors of domestic and sexual violence and stalking throughout the criminal justice process. Assist victims prior to, during and after court proceedings, and provide information about additional resources. Advocates also provide educational outreach to their communities. The AmeriCorps Victim Assistance Program provides professional experience, the chance to work as part of a national community service organization and the opportunity to work with victims and survivors of domestic and sexual violence. Full time members receive a living allowance, education award, health insurance and child care benefits if eligible. Part time members receive some pro-rated benefits.
History:
The AmeriCorps Victim Assistance Program (AVAP started in 1994, the first year of AmeriCorps. It has served as a multi-agaency collaborative program ever since.
