The American Red Cross is an humanitarian organization led by volunteers, that provides relief to victims of disasters and helps people prevent, prepare for, and respond to emergencies. It does this through services that are consistent with it's congressional charter and the fundamental principals of the International Red Cross Movement.

Description:
There are five key services that the
American Red Cross provides:

  • Armed Forces Emergency Services (AFES):
provides reporting and communication
services through a network that links members
of the Military with their loved ones anywhere
in the world.
  • Biomedical Services:
conducts research and provides collection,
testing, processing, and distribution of
blood and blood products for almost
50% of the American public.
  • Disaster Services:
Each year the Red Cross responds to more
than 70,000 disasters.
  • Health & Safety Services:
helps save lives and strengthen our
communities.
  • International Services:
works with a global network of Red Cross,
Red Crescent and equivalent societies to
restore hope and dignity to the worlds
most vulnerable people.

History:
Clara Barton, a former school teacher and government worker became famous during the Civil War for caring for the wounded on the battlefield, and following that war she traveled to Europe and learned about the Red Cross Movement. Upon her return to the United States, Clara joined with a group of friends and founded the American Association of the Red Cross on May 21,1881
