United Way of Sullivan County is a non profit organization helping our neighbors, friends and families of Sullivan County when they need it the most.
Description:
The United Way of Sullivan County serves 15 communities with 24 human service agencies supplying much needed funds to them. These agencies are instrumental in bringing help to those members of our communities that need it most when there is nowhere else to go. People helping people in times of need is what it is all about.
These agencies help by giving people rides to doctor appointments, help battered and/or abused men, women and children, bring meals to people that can't get out or cook a nutritious meal, feed the hungry a meal per day. They provide day care for parents that can't afford it, give psychological help to people who need it, help the young the weak and elderly and many more in many other ways.
Sullivan County has a population of about 41,000 people. The average household income is around $20,000 annually per working person of adult years under the age of retirement. Approximately 18,000 people are working full time. In the 15 communities of Sullivan County including, Acworth, Charlestown, Claremont, Cornish, Croydon, Goshen, Grantham, Langdon, Lempster, Newport, Plainfield, Springfield, Sunapee, Unity and Washington, social services were accessed over 10,000 times last year.
History:
United Way of America began in 1887 when, in Denver, religious leaders founded the Charity Organizations Society. This organization planned and coordinated local services and conducted a single fund-raising campaign for 22 agencies. Locally, United Way of Sullivan County began in 1979.
