A Safe Place is actively seeking members of the community who are committed to making a difference, lending their time and expertise by serving on our Board of Directors. Some of the INDIVIDUAL BOARD MEMBER RESPONSIBILITIES would include:
- Participation in at least 5 hours of orientation within their first few months on the board.
- Participation in a minimum of 2 hours of board training annually.
- Serve approximately 8-10 hours of time a month.
- Remain on the board for a 3-year term.
- Attend most, if not all, of the monthly board meetings.
- Attend 1 day long meeting a year.
General expectations: - Know A Safe Place mission, philosophies, goals, policies, programs, services, strengths, and needs.
- Suggest and recruit nominees to serve on the Board.
- Take leadership positions or undertake special assignments.
- Represent A Safe Place and its mission at outreach and funding events and in the general community.
- Continue to raise your awareness surrounding the issues of domestic abuse and best practices.
Meetings: - Prepare for and participate in board and committee meetings, and other organizational activities.
- Ask timely and substantive questions while supporting the majority decision.
- Maintain confidentiality of the Board's executive decisions.
- Suggest agenda items periodically for board and committee meetings, to ensure that significant policy related matters are addressed.
Relationship with staff: - Counsel the Executive Director as appropriate and offer support.
- Consult and get feedback from staff about the work they do to get a better understanding of the organization.
Fiduciary responsibility: - Exercise prudence with the board in the control and transfer of funds.
- Faithfully read and understand the organization's financial statements and otherwise help the board fulfill its fiduciary responsibility.
Fund raising: - Give an annual gift according to personal means.
- Assist the development committee and staff by implementing fund raising strategies through personal influence with others (corporations, foundations, and individuals).
The Mission of A Safe Place is to break the cycle of domestic abuse by providing crisis intervention, support services, education, and advocacy to survivors, their families, and the community.
