The Youth Golf & Academics Program (YGAP) is a nonprofit after-school program for inner city children in West and Southwest Philadelphia. Former Phillies centerfielder Garry Maddox founded YGAP in order to help even the playing field between inner-city children and their more advantaged peers. For children who otherwise would not have access to after-school academic enrichment opportunities, YGAP is a safe, educational place to go during the hours when they are most at-risk of engaging in delinquent or anti-social behavior. We support the academic and social development of at-risk children, before they fall through the cracks.

Description:
YGAP takes place from 3:00-6:00 on school days at Lea and Longstreth Schools, and participants also come from Belmont Charter School. Each day, children receive a snack, complete their homework, participate in supplementary academic enrichment activities, and enjoy recreational time.Children are recommended to the program by their teachers in kindergarten or first grade, and usually stay with the program through fifth grade. There is never any fee for the children's participation.

History:
The Youth Golf & Academics Program was founded by former Phillies centerfielder Gary Maddox, and incorporated in 2000. Originally serving children in both Camden and Philadelphia with a heavily athletic program, YGAP has evolved into a more academic program with sites in Philadelphia.
